About Me

Hi, I’m Sabine Gorus, an artist based in Aschaffenburg, Germany.

I consider myself self-taught, as I never attended an art academy — but painting has somehow always been part of me. Instead, I studied media informatics, which might explain why I tend to analyze things and think in a structured way. At the same time, I’ve realized that my creative mind primarily thinks in images — and keeps producing them: constantly, persistently, sometimes uncontrollably and uninvited, and sometimes as a way to give shape to thoughts and emotions. So I paint these images.

My style is primarily figurative and moves between realism and surrealism, between conceptual exploration and impulsive visual ideas. Some series emerge from an intense engagement with social or psychological themes. Others are motifs that simply won’t leave me alone until they end up on canvas — without explanation. Sometimes grotesque, sometimes colorful, sometimes just strange. I move between psychological depth and complete absurdity. Not every painting needs to explain itself. But every painting should have an impact.

I’m interested in inner tensions, social conflicts, and emotional extremes — as much as in bold colors, strong contrasts, and visual presence. For me, aesthetics are not the opposite of meaning, but an amplifier of it. And sometimes they are the starting point — not because they need to carry a hidden message, but simply because they fascinate. I mainly work with oil and acrylic on canvas. Oil paint in particular allows me to build intensity and depth — both visually and conceptually.

What connects my work is the balance between seriousness and humor, depth and nonsense. It allows me to engage with heavy themes while also creating completely free, ironic, or playful pieces. Both are part of my artistic thinking.

I take my subjects seriously.
The art world — not always.
Myself — only when necessary.
